ADRIAN — ProMedica Hickman Hospital and United for Prevention and Recovery have confirmed the results of the most recent Lenawee County Drug Takeback Day, which was held in October.
The semiannual event aims to give Lenawee residents a place to safely dispose of unused, expired, or hazardous medications and sharps, such as needles and test lancets.
Event coordinator Brooke Habay (huh-BAY) told WLEN News that 190 individuals attended the event, and 399 pounds of medications and 12 28-gallon containers of sharps were collected.
In comparison, the prior event, which took place in April, saw 250 participants, with 452 pounds of medication and 13 containers of sharps collected.
Since April 2021, each event typically gathers between 280 and 510 pounds of medications, and similar quantities of sharps, with an average turnout of 180 to 250 participants per event.
Lenawee County is noted as hosting one of the largest Drug Takeback events in Michigan, largely due to the volume consolidated from other collection sources, and their collection numbers are among the highest in Michigan.
