LANSING — State Representative William Bruck, representing parts of Monroe and Lenawee County, has announced a bipartisan legislative package aimed at strengthening drone security across the state.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. Plan — short for Securing Homeland and Infrastructure with Emerging Laws for Drones — is designed to balance innovation with accountability by establishing safeguards to prevent the misuse of unmanned aerial systems.

Bruck’s portion of the legislation would prohibit state and local agencies from purchasing or using drones containing parts manufactured by companies of concern, as identified by federal standards. The measure provides a two- to five-year implementation timeline to allow agencies to transition away from potentially compromised technology.

The plan also includes bills from several lawmakers, addressing issues such as restricted airspace near critical facilities, drone detection technology, and the creation of a statewide drone registry.

The SHIELD legislation will now move through the Michigan House for committee consideration before advancing to a full vote.
