USDA Orders Partial November SNAP Payments

LANSING — The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says the U.S. Department of Agriculture has ordered states to issue only partial SNAP benefits for November due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.

Partial payments, about half of normal monthly benefits, will begin going out on Saturday, November 8. Recipients who typically receive benefits on the third, fifth, or seventh of the month will get their partial allotment that day, while all others will receive partial benefits on their usual payment date.

The USDA told MDHHS that limited federal funding is forcing the reduction, using SNAP contingency funds to cover roughly half of the $9.2 billion national cost of benefits this month.

Officials say additional court rulings could still change the timeline or payment amounts. MDHHS will provide updates if that happens.
