LENAWEE CO. — The 102nd United States Colored Troops Company C will represent Michigan in the 2025 New York City Veterans Day Parade, the nation’s largest celebration of military service.
The student-led living history organization, also known as the Gospel Army Black History Group, will march along Fifth Avenue on Tuesday, November 11, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. The parade will be streamed nationwide.
This year’s event marks a historic milestone as the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps each celebrate their 250th anniversaries. Thousands of participants and spectators are expected to gather for the occasion.
The 102nd traces its lineage to the 1st Michigan Colored Regiment, formed in 1863, which became part of the United States Colored Troops. More than 180,000 African American soldiers fought for the Union during the Civil War, including roughly 1,400 from Michigan.
Today, the group continues to preserve that legacy through education and public reenactments. Comprised of about 40 high school and college students, the 102nd Company C brings the past to life while honoring those who served.
