
MONROE CO. — A teenage boy died early Saturday morning after being hit by a car in Frenchtown Township, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Preliminary investigation reveals the victim, a 15-year-old male from Carleton, and his friend, a 14-year-old male from Newport, were walking southbound on North Telegraph Road on the northbound shoulder of the roadway, close to the white fog line..
At around 1:30 AM, the 15-year-old was struck by a white Dodge Journey and came to rest in the east side ditch line of northbound Telegraph Road.
The Dodge Journey came to a controlled stop in a Marathon Gas Station parking lot, north of where the crash occurred.
The driver, 31-year-old Mary Spurlock of Newport, reported the crash to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office after noticing her vehicle was damaged, and did not initially realize she had struck a pedestrian.
Airbags in the vehicle did not deploy, and Spurlock was wearing her safety belt.
The 15-year-old, who was wearing dark colored clothing, was transported to Corewell Trenton Hospital in Trenton, where he was pronounced deceased.
Spurlock was not injured and released from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say driver inattention is a factor in the crash.
The crash remains under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Services Division.
