LANSING — State Senator Joseph Bellino of Monroe has introduced a set of bills aimed at ending Michigan’s film office and the state’s main economic development agency.

Bellino says the Michigan Economic Development Corporation has wasted taxpayer money for years, calling its programs ineffective. His proposal would shut down the MEDC and related programs, including the Michigan Film and Digital Media Office.

The plan would move remaining funds into the state’s general fund and create a new Bureau of Fair Competition and Free Enterprise. That new office would keep oversight on redevelopment projects and make sure taxpayer investments are handled properly.

Supporters say it would bring more accountability, while critics worry it could drive jobs and film production out of Michigan.
