LENAWEE CO. — Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg is supporting the Trump administration’s new rule on the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, also known as PSLF.

Walberg said the program was originally meant to help fill workforce needs for employers serving the public good — but has instead allowed taxpayer dollars to cover student loans for what he called, quote, “radical organizations,” unquote.

He stated the new rule prevents federal funds from forgiving loans for workers involved with groups that, in his words, “violate state and federal laws.”

The administration’s update follows an executive order narrowing who qualifies for PSLF, excluding workers for certain nonprofit and advocacy groups.

The rule is expected to take effect following standard administrative review.
