JACKSON — State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz, who represents the 46th House District — including Jackson — is backing a new bipartisan plan to help fill open jobs in Michigan.

Schmaltz co-sponsored House Bills 51-18 and 51-19 to create a state Work Opportunity Tax Credit. The credit would encourage employers to hire veterans, people with disabilities, and people re-entering the workforce.

Supporters say it would give job providers an extra push to hire workers who have trouble getting a first chance and help reduce the worker shortage in Michigan.

The bills were sent to the House Economic Competitiveness Committee for review.
