Michigan-Indiana border survey timeline extended

LANSING — The Michigan Senate has approved a bill to help finish a long-running survey of the Michigan-Indiana border.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Jonathan Lindsey of Coldwater, would extend the deadline to complete the border survey.

The original survey was last done by Congress in the 1800s, before Michigan became a state. Many of the border markers have since been lost or moved, which has caused legal problems and confusion over property and enforcement lines.

A 2022 state law set Michigan’s duties and funding for the project, but delays in hiring a survey company slowed the work.

Senate Bill 595 would also allow counties to hire their own surveyors instead of waiting for one company to do the whole line.

The bill now moves forward in the legislative process.
