LANSING — The Michigan Department of Treasury is asking people to volunteer with free tax preparation programs ahead of the 2026 tax season.
These programs include VITA, TCE and AARP Foundation Tax-Aide.
The programs help low- and moderate-income households, seniors, people with disabilities and people who speak English as a second language file their taxes at no cost. State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks said free tax preparation services are a lifeline for working families and seniors and volunteers play a direct role in helping neighbors gain financial security.
The state said volunteers do not need prior tax experience. They receive free training and IRS certification and can take on roles that match their skills, such as greeting or preparing returns. Training is offered online and in person.
People can sign up to train and volunteer at MichiganFreeTaxHelp.org/Volunteer.
