TECUMSEH — Tecumseh Public Schools says a budget variance found by auditors came from legally required special education costs, not from lost or misused money.

Superintendent Matt Hilton explained the start of the issue when auditors reviewed the records.

Hilton said the dollars did not go missing and were spent on services the district is required to provide for students with disabilities.

Hilton went on to say the district still added money to its savings, just not as much as planned, because the special education line was under-budgeted up front.

That was Tecumseh Superintendent Matt Hilton.

The variance was found during the annual audit, and the district is adding monthly budget checks while using a conservative plan for next year.

Tecumseh will review projections again this winter to make adjustments early if needed.
