MICHIGAN — A new national study says Michigan is one of the hardest-working states in America when it comes to covering everyday bills.
The research from Advance America used a survey of 3,000 families and compared typical household costs to median income. It found that in Michigan, the average household must work 23 days each month just to afford basic needs like food, housing, utilities, health care, and transportation.
Only three states — Alabama, Rhode Island, and Mississippi — ranked higher.
The report also asked families what they would cut first if money got tighter. Most said eating out and entertainment would go before groceries or utilities. By far, groceries were named the fastest-rising expense.
Researchers say the results show that the biggest strain on families is not extras, but the cost of basic living.
