LANSING — The Michigan Wheat Program and Michigan State University have announced this year’s top growers in the Great Lakes Yield Enhancement Network, or YEN.

The cross-border program, started in 2021, helps farmers in Michigan and Ontario boost winter wheat yields through data sharing and research.

This year’s highest yields came from Nick Suwyn of Wayland, Michigan, with 182.7 bushels per acre; Wayne Metzger of Proton Station, Ontario, with 170.1; and Ben Wilson of Carson City, Michigan, with 156.2.

Suwyn also led the region in yield potential, reaching 118 percent of possible yield — the highest in program history.

Organizers say the results show how careful management and shared knowledge can lead to stronger harvests across the Great Lakes region.
