
Shirley Jean Porterfield, 90, of Clinton, passed away peacefully on October 3rd, 2025. She was born on August 24, 1935, the daughter of Clinton and Edna (Wackenhut) Hoelzer. On June 18, 1955 she married Dale L. Porterfield of Clinton MI.
Shirley was a proud graduate of Clinton High School and went on to attend Jackson Business College, where she completed courses as a comptometer operator. Throughout her life, Shirley was known for her warm heart, quick wit, and love of bringing people together. She especially enjoyed playing bingo, trips to the casino, cheering on the Detroit Tigers and the Michigan State Spartans, and hosting family gatherings where she made everyone feel at home. A talented cook, Shirley’s meals and holiday spreads became treasured traditions in her family. She was also admired for her kindness—she never spoke poorly of anyone and had a gift for making people feel loved and valued.
She was deeply proud of her nieces and nephews and held her extended family close to her heart.
Shirley is survived by her husband Dale of 70 years; her children: Jane (Tom Janicki) Porterfield, Sandra (Tim) Smith, Jeff Porterfield, and Steve (Tonia) Porterfield; three grandchildren, Nick (Jillian), Katie, and Lindsey (Anthony); and seven great-grandsons, Gabe, Tatum, Sawyer, Rhett, Kobe, Lennon, and Louie. She is also survived by her sister Bonnie (Rick) Buckmaster and her brothers Tom (Christine Holtz) Hoelzer and Butch Hoelzer.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters Susie (Gary) Underwood and Joyce Thomas; and her brother John Hoelzer.
Shirley’s family and friends will remember her as a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister whose gentle spirit, generosity, and love for family will live on in all who knew her.
According to Shirley’s wishes, there will be no service. A private graveside service will be held at Riverside Cemetery. Memorial contributions in honor of Shirley may be made to the Clinton Fire & Rescue or Hospice of Lenawee. Arrangements are under the care of the Clinton Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes.
