LENAWEE CO. — The federal government remains shut down after the U.S. Senate voted 55–45 on Wednesday against a short-term funding resolution.

Congressman Tim Walberg noted that the House approved a funding bill earlier this month, but the measure did not move forward in the Senate.

In a press release, Congressman Walberg said, “…after voting to shut down the government last night, Senate Democrats have decided to continue to keep the government closed through a vote this afternoon. It’s time for common sense to prevail and for Senate Democrats to reopen the government and bring their shutdown to an end.”

The shutdown began Tuesday when lawmakers were unable to agree on a budget before the start of the new fiscal year. Without an appropriation, many federal agencies have paused or reduced services, while essential operations remain in place.

Negotiations are continuing, but no timetable has been announced for a final deal to reopen the government.
