
Bernard “Bernie” Tonsor Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025, at the age of 72. Born December 16, 1952, to the late Bernard Tonsor Sr. and Bernadine Tonsor.
He served his country honorably as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from 1971 to 1975, during this time he served in the Vietnam War and earned multiple awards including a purple heart and a medal of valor. During his time in the Marines, he embodied the values of honor, courage and commitment. On December 23, 1971, Bernie married the love of his life, Rebecca (Finnie) Tonsor. Together they built an adventurous life, raising four children: Joshua Tonsor, Jennifer Tonsor-Graff (Daniel), Jacqueolynn Whiteley (Nicholaus), and Bernard Tonsor lll (Tracy). Bernie’s legacy lives on in his 15 grandchildren, whom he loved dearly: Brett (Mona) Tonsor, Derek Graff, Gabrielle Whiteley, Bryce Tonsor, Daniel Graff, John Zakrzewski, Emily Tonsor, William Tonsor, Tyler Whiteley, Brayden Graff, Brady Tonsor, Kainan Tonsor, Bryan Tonsor, Natalie Whiteley, and Maddison Mackenzie Graff. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia Goodrich (Rod), Brother-in-law Dave (Pat) Finnie, Sister-in-law Rhea (Mike) Rasdale as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
Throughout his life, Bernie worked in many roles, including as a Sergeant in the Marine Corps, a corrections officer, farmer, contractor, basketball coach and videographer for 9&10 News. Bernie was known for his big personality, beautiful singing voice and desire to help his friends in need. He found joy in being outdoors, riding snowmobiles, hunting and raising many different animals while farming. He had a gift for storytelling, wise advice, and a willingness to offer a shoulder to lean on. Bernie wore his heart on his sleeve and loved his family and friends deeply.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Bernadine Tonsor; his father-in-law, Jack Finnie; his mother-in-law, Loraine Finnie; his brother-in-law, Roger Finnie; and his sister-in-law, Darlene Finnie.
A celebration of Bernie’s life will be held at a later date, allowing friends and family to come together in remembrance of the love, laughter, and legacy he leaves behind.
