LANSING — State Representative William Bruck’s plan to improve traffic flow and safety on Michigan highways has advanced in the state House.

House Bill 4522 would require large trucks and tractor-trailers to stay out of the left lane on expressways with three or more lanes. Current law already directs trucks to the right except when passing, but the bill gives law enforcement a clearer way to enforce the rule.

Bruck represents the 30th House District, which includes parts of Monroe and Lenawee counties. He said the goal is to make driving safer and reduce frustration for motorists.

There are a few exceptions. Trucks could use the left lane before making a left turn, in construction zones, or if another lane is unsafe. On two-lane roads under construction, trucks would have to stay in the right lane.

The measure passed the House with bipartisan support and now heads to the Senate for consideration.
