Janet Marie Pickell – Deerfield

Janet Marie Pickell, age 82, of Deerfield, MI, passed away on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 under the care of Hospice of Lenawee. She was born on October 7, 1942, in Jackson, MI, the daughter of the late Robert Francis and Mabel Marciel (Warner) Doty.

Janet worked at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital as a Patient Care Tech where she loved the time she spent taking care of the babies at the hospital. She attended Ogden Church for several years and volunteered many hours as their secretary. Janet was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Britton, MI and was an avid bowler, and participated in the Jaycee Follies. She also served as a foster parent for a number of years. In her later years she enjoyed doing puzzles, sitting on her porch and spending time with her cat, Jack.

Janet is survived by her four children, Chris (Debbie) Pickell of Tecumseh, MI, Ron (Diane) Pickell of Grayling, MI, Shelly (Darwyn) Case of Deerfield, MI, and Lisa (Mark) Carr, of Brooklyn, MI; her thirteen grandchildren, Lindsay (Ian) Albers, Matthew (Ashleigh) Gapinski, R. J. (Katy) Pickell, Brianna (David) Valdez, Darwyn (Nichole) Case Jr., Jason (Loren) Case, Colby (Matthew) Ruttkofsky, Tashi (Kevin Ford) Case, Megan (Erik) Fortman, Paul (Madyson Bishop) Kolby, Nate (Lexie) Carr, Wyatt and Collin Carr; twenty-eight great-grandchildren, her sister, Nancy Doty of Clinton, MI; a good friend, Marge Allen; and her beloved cat, Jack.

In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by a grandson, Christopher Pickell Jr.; her brother, Ronald Doty; and her significant other, James Clement.

A funeral service for Janet will be held at 4:00 pm on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes, with Matt Ruttkofsky officiating. Visitation will begin at 2:00 pm at the funeral home and continue until the time of the service. A private burial for Janet will take place at Roseland Memorial Gardens in Jackson, Michigan. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lenawee Humane Society.
