WASHINGTON — Congressman Tim Walberg is pressing a union chapter about its hiring practices.
On Monday, Walberg, who chairs the House Education and Workforce Committee, sent a letter to Service Employees International Union Local 87. He is asking why the union hired a convicted child molester to serve as a business agent.
Walberg said the investigation will look at how SEIU and its local chapters handle hiring of registered sex offenders, especially since many of their members work with children and vulnerable people.
The committee is also reviewing whether federal labor laws should be changed to prevent registered sex offenders from holding union office.
Local 87 has been asked to respond to the committee with more information.
