LENAWEE CO. — A large batch of property tax repayments is moving forward in Lenawee County.
The repayments are tied to principal residence exemptions, which lower property taxes for homeowners living in their main home.
During the pandemic, state audits of these exemptions were paused. When the reviews started again, the state found cases where exemptions should not have been granted.
Counties collected those funds and are now sending the money back to local schools and municipalities.
Officials said this is part of a larger statewide process, and more batches of repayments are expected in the months ahead.
