JACKSON — State Representative Kathy Schmaltz is leading a plan to protect seniors and vulnerable adults in Michigan.

The plan would require professional guardians and conservators to be licensed, certified, and pass background checks. It also creates a state board to oversee their work and handle complaints from families.

Supporters say the change would give families peace of mind and help prevent abuse or financial exploitation.

The package of bills was approved by the House Families and Veterans Committee.

The measures now move to the full House of Representatives for further debate.
