LENAWEE CO. — Congressman Tim Walberg, chair of the House Education and Workforce Committee, has released a new report warning about partnerships between American universities and schools in China.

Walberg, who chairs the House Education and Workforce Committee, worked with Congressman John Moolenaar, who chairs the Select Committee on China. The report says some U.S. colleges are teaming up with Chinese schools tied to that country’s military.

Examples include programs in submarine engineering, aircraft power, and rocket design. Lawmakers say these partnerships could give China an advantage in building weapons.

Walberg says this shows why Congress needs to pass new laws like the SAFE Research Act. That bill would stop U.S. tax dollars from supporting universities that work with China’s military or intelligence services.

The full report is available through Walberg’s office.
