LANSING — The Michigan Senate has approved a package of bills that will allow carbon capture and storage projects in the state.
Senate Bills 394 through 396 set up a regulatory program for capturing carbon dioxide from power plants and industrial sites and storing it underground.
The Michigan Environmental Council and other groups warn the bills don’t include strong safeguards. They say leaks could threaten drinking water and future taxpayers could be left with the cost of closed projects.
Abby Clark, Michigan Director, Government Affairs, Natural Resources Defense Council said, quote, “Michigan simply must do more to safeguard communities and the state’s unique freshwater resources from harmful pollution,” unquote.
The bills now move forward for implementation.
