LANSING — Michigan school leaders are warning state lawmakers to pass a budget as soon as possible.

Dr. Tina Kerr, the head of the Michigan Association of Superintendents and School Administrators, says districts across the state are starting the new school year without knowing how much money they will get from the state.

In a press release, Dr. Kerr said quote, “The governor and Senate have both proposed comprehensive, sustainable budgets of their own, but the House has yet to vote on a realistic budget, which means that more than 600 school districts are starting school without knowing what their funding will be for the year.

Without the legislature doing its job, school districts are forced to work from contingency budgets that may not reflect reality and will then have to rework them based on the final approved numbers from the state. This is the very definition of government waste, and the blame at this point falls directly on the State House.” unquote.

School leaders say lawmakers should pass the budget first, before focusing on other issues.
