HILLSDALE — A new law will honor Hillsdale County Deputy Sheriff William Butler Jr., who was killed in the line of duty in 2024.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed Senator Joseph Bellino’s bill naming part of M-34, from Pioneer Road to South Pittsford Road, as the Deputy Sheriff William Butler Jr. Memorial Highway.

Butler was 51 years old and had served the county for 12 years. He was also an Iraq War veteran, a husband, and a father. He was the first Hillsdale County deputy killed on duty since 1930.

This memorial ensures Butler’s service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.
