LANSING — State Representative William Bruck’s plan to keep large trucks out of the left lane has cleared its first step in Lansing.

The bill passed the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on Tuesday. It would require tractor-trailers to stay out of the left lane on expressways with three or more lanes. Trucks could still move left in certain cases, like preparing for a turn or moving through construction.

Supporters say the change would reduce congestion and make highways safer. The Michigan Trucking Association also backs the plan.

Bruck represents part of Lenawee County, including Deerfield, Ridgeway, and part of Blissfield Township. He was first elected in 2022 and also serves on the House Oversight Committee.

The bill now moves to the full House for consideration.
