MONROE — The Port of Monroe will get $1 million to help improve its facilities and increase capacity.

The funding comes from the Michigan Brownfield Redevelopment Program, run by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, and funded and overseen by the current Democratic-led state government. The program offers grants to help redevelop properties that may have environmental challenges, such as contamination or outdated infrastructure.

Senator Joseph Bellino says the project will help the Port of Monroe, the only port in Michigan on Lake Erie, compete with other Great Lakes ports. He says improving efficiency will support good-paying jobs and lower shipping costs.

The grant will help with a multi-part plan to update and expand the port’s infrastructure.

The Brownfield Redevelopment Program awards grants and loans of up to $1 million for cleanup and redevelopment projects across the state.
