Citizens Gas Franchise Heads to November Ballot

ADRIAN — Ballot language for a 30-year franchise agreement with Citizens Gas has been approved.

The vote came after a public hearing at Monday night’s meeting.

Citizens Gas representatives Molly Lumber Coy and Joe Lucy spoke during the hearing, highlighting the company’s 169-year history in Adrian, its investment in local infrastructure, and its quick turnaround times for service.

They emphasized that all customer service is handled locally and said most employees live and work in Lenawee County.

The franchise agreement would allow Citizens Gas to continue using city-owned rights-of-way to deliver natural gas. City officials clarified that the franchise is not exclusive and does not prevent other providers from entering the market.

Because it’s a long-term franchise, the Michigan Constitution requires voter approval. The proposal will appear on the November general election ballot.
