TECUMSEH — The Tecumseh Zoning Board of Appeals has denied a request to reinstall a non-conforming pole sign at the plaza located at 1207 West Chicago Boulevard.
The property owners sought a variance after the original sign was damaged by a commercial truck and removed for safety reasons. They argued that a new ground-mounted sign would obstruct visibility for neighboring businesses, including Arby’s.
However, city staff and planning consultants from McKenna said there are viable options that meet current zoning standards, including installation on the east side of the drive.
Chair Peter White cited city ordinance Section 98-597, which requires all pole signs removed due to damage to be rebuilt under updated zoning rules.
The board voted unanimously, three to zero, to deny the variance.
The owners will now need to submit a compliant sign plan under the current zoning code if they wish to replace the signage.
