Protecting Lung Health on Poor Air Quality Days

ADRIAN — As hazy skies and wildfire smoke become more common during Michigan summers, the Lenawee County Health Department is reminding residents to take precautions on poor air quality days.

The Air Quality Index, or AQI, is a color-coded system that tracks pollution levels in real time. When levels rise into the orange or red zones, the air can be unhealthy, especially for children, seniors, and people with asthma or heart conditions.

To stay safe:

  • Check the AQI before heading outside.
  • Limit outdoor activity when air quality is poor.
  • Keep windows closed and use fans or air purifiers indoors.
  • And if you must be outside, consider wearing an N95 mask to filter out harmful particles.

You can track the local air quality at airnow.gov, on most weather apps, or through the Lenawee Health Department’s website and social media.
