TOLEDO — As schools gear up for a new academic year, the American Lung Association is stepping in to raise awareness about the dangers of asthma, especially in children.

More than 163,000 kids in Ohio live with asthma, and the risks grow during fall sports and respiratory virus season. That’s why the Lung Association, with funding from the Reid Wiley Charitable Foundation, is offering free educational tools to schools and families across the state.

The initiative includes asthma flipcharts for school nurses, training programs, and back-to-school backpacks filled with supplies to help manage asthma attacks.

The program honors the memory of Reid Wiley, a student-athlete who died from asthma complications in 2020. His parents, Glenn and Mary Wiley, will be available for interviews alongside Lung Association experts on Monday, August 4 from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.
