ADRIAN — The Lenawee Intermediate School District Board approved a $437,780 contract to build a new inclusive playground. The project will feature a full rubber safety surface and is intended to serve students with a wide range of needs.
The decision follows a lengthy planning process by district administrators. Board members voted to award the contract to Play Environmental Design, a Michigan-based firm that specializes in accessible recreational structures.
According to the board’s report, the playground will be built with safety-grade rubber surfacing and is intended to replace an outdated structure. LISD officials said the district will offset project costs with a large estate gift from a former special education student who later worked as a social worker.
The board approved the contract by a 5-0 vote. Design modifications were negotiated to reduce project cost.
Construction is expected to begin later this year, with completion targeted before the end of the upcoming school year. Officials said the new playground will support the district’s commitment to inclusive education and barrier-free access.
***To make sure we have clarification, we have found where the new park will be located. It will be on the north side the Milton C. Porter Center on Sutton, between the Porter Building and the Transportation Facility.
