ADRIAN — The City of Adrian Planning Commission will hold two open house sessions to share and discuss the highlights of its proposed new zoning ordinance. The sessions will be held at the City Chambers Building, 159 E. Maumee Street, on Tuesday, July 15 from 4 to 6 p.m., and again on Thursday, July 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. The same program will be offered on both days.

City officials and members of the Planning Commission will be available to answer questions and collect public feedback.

Adrian’s current zoning ordinance was adopted in 2006, with only piecemeal updates since. Officials say the ordinance has become difficult to interpret and lacks alignment with modern planning needs and state law.

The overhaul stems from Adrian’s effort to become a Redevelopment Ready Community, a voluntary certification program through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. To qualify, a city’s zoning code must support redevelopment goals and meet best practice standards in economic planning.

A working group of city officials, Planning Commission members, and outside consultants has spent months drafting the new code. A copy of the proposed ordinance is available online at: tinyurl.com/adrianproposedzoningordinance

The Planning Commission is expected to consider the draft ordinance for formal recommendation at its August 5 meeting, where additional public comment will be accepted before it heads to the City Commission for a final decision.
