LENAWEE CO. — A $1.8 million infrastructure project to improve hygiene and detention systems at the Maurice Spear Campus is advancing to the full Lenawee County Board of Commissioners for approval.

The Personnel/Ways & Means Committee recommended moving forward with the proposal on Tuesday. The project is partly funded by a $1.33 million grant from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, with a required local match of $500,000.

Officials said the funds will support renovations to the existing juvenile detention facility, including essential upgrades to bathrooms, plumbing, and general infrastructure.

When applying for the grant, the county initially submitted estimates from a contractor. Final bids were recently received and presented for committee consideration.

If approved by the full board at its July 9 meeting, the renovation will proceed this year.

The Maurice Spear Campus provides juvenile detention and treatment services for youth across Lenawee County and neighboring jurisdictions.
