ADRIAN — A new survey asked Michiganders where they wanted their ashes scattered on Independence Day.
The top choice was Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island. Established in 1780 and later turned over to the United States, Fort Mackinac is known for its Revolutionary War history and daily reenactments.
The second most popular choice was Fort Wayne in Detroit, a historic star-shaped fort along the Detroit River that has served various military roles since the 1840s.
Nationally, other top choices included Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, and Fort Mose in Florida, the country’s first legally sanctioned free Black settlement.
Survey organizers noted that many people chose places tied to resistance and the evolving story of American freedom, not just iconic landmarks.
Choice Mutual, a life insurance agency specializing in final expense coverage, conducted the survey.
