LANSING — State Representative Kathy Schmaltz has introduced a plan to support Michigan National Guard members by helping cover health and dental insurance costs when they are not on active duty.
Schmaltz said while Guard members receive health coverage when deployed, many pay out of pocket to maintain coverage between assignments.
House Bill 4712 would create a state reimbursement program for Guard members without other insurance options. The Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs would manage the program and handle applications.
Schmaltz said the plan is a practical way to support Guard members’ health, readiness, and peace of mind.
The bill has been referred to the House Families and Veterans Committee, which Schmaltz chairs.
