LANSING — The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is reminding pet and livestock owners to plan for animal safety during Independence Day celebrations.
Fireworks can frighten animals, increasing the risk of them running away or becoming injured. State officials urge owners to keep pets and livestock indoors or in a secure area when fireworks are expected.
Owners should provide a quiet space to reduce stress and carefully monitor doors to prevent accidental escapes.
It’s also important to ensure animals have ID tags or registered microchips with up-to-date contact information.
Animal control officials said many animals go missing around July 4th, making the days after the holiday some of the busiest for shelters.
Pet owners are also reminded to keep dogs on a leash, avoid setting off fireworks near animals, and check for debris before allowing animals back outside.
