LANSING — The Michigan Senate has approved two bills sponsored by Sen. Joseph Bellino to honor fallen law enforcement officers from his district.

One bill would name part of M-50 in Monroe County as the Animal Control Officer Darrian Young Memorial Highway. Young died after a drunken driver struck her vehicle.

The other bill would name part of M-34 in Hillsdale County as the Deputy Sheriff William Butler Jr. Memorial Highway. Butler was killed while assisting another officer during a traffic stop.

Bellino said the legislation helps the community remember the officers’ service and sacrifice.

The highway markers would be funded by private contributions, with no cost to the state or local governments.

The bills now move to the governor’s desk for final approval.
