Maria A. Smith, age 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at the Hospice of Lenawee Home in Adrian, Michigan.

Born on August 21, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York, Maria was the daughter of Joseph and Martha (Tranchita) DiGiovanni. After earning her bachelor’s degree, she began her career as an elementary school teacher in New York. Maria found great joy in teaching before choosing to dedicate herself fully to her family as a homemaker.

In July of 1959, Maria married Robert Smith in New York. Together they shared over 37 wonderful years of marriage before Robert’s passing in November of 1996. Their life together was filled with adventure and travel—they explored Europe, Italy, and Hawaii, and she accompanied Robert on his work trips to Super Bowls and Miss America pageants. After Robert’s passing, Maria continued her love for exploration by visiting every national park in the United States.

While living in Florida, Maria was an active member of the Moose Lodge. She was also a gifted pianist who found joy in music throughout her life. Maria enjoyed dining out, spending time at casinos with friends in Las Vegas, and tending to her flower garden. She had a deep love for animals and always had a dog by her side.

To cherish her memory, Maria leaves her children, Donna (Will) Rondeau and Mark (Laura) Smith; three grandchildren: Matthew (Haley) Lastra, Brian Smith, and Alison Smith; and a brother, Joseph DiGiovanni. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

The family will receive friends for visitation at the Anderson-Marry Funeral Home, Adrian, on Saturday, July 5, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. until a funeral service begins at 10:00 am. Fr. Michael Newman, OSFS will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Adrian.
