ADRIAN — Lenawee County officials are promoting healthy habits and summer safety tips to help residents enjoy outdoor activities while minimizing risks. The guidance includes hydration, sun protection, helmet use, and precautions against insects and germs.
As summer temperatures rise, the Lenawee County Health Department is encouraging families to stay active while also protecting themselves from common seasonal health hazards. A county blog post, published on May 20, outlines practical advice for outdoor wellness throughout the summer months.
Health officials recommend drinking water throughout the day, especially during periods of high heat and physical activity. Residents are advised to carry reusable bottles and limit their intake of sugary or caffeinated drinks, as these can increase dehydration.
Sun safety remains a top priority. Experts urge residents to apply SPF 30+ sunscreen every two hours, wear hats and sunglasses, and seek shade during peak sunlight hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Helmet use is also highlighted for biking, skating, and scootering. Helmets should fit snugly and sit level on the head, while bike equipment should be checked regularly for safety.
To prevent bug-borne illnesses like Lyme disease or West Nile virus, residents should apply repellent with DEET or similar ingredients and perform full-body tick checks after time outdoors.
Hand hygiene remains essential. Frequent handwashing with soap and water — or using 60% alcohol hand sanitizer when soap isn’t available — is encouraged after outdoor play, meals, or using public facilities.
The blog also encourages Lenawee residents to support local farmers’ markets and increase daily physical activity through walking, swimming, gardening, or dancing. Officials say simple practices can help prevent avoidable injuries and illnesses.
