DETROIT — The Detroit Festival of Books will feature its largest-ever offering of free children’s programming during this year’s event, scheduled for Sunday, July 20, at Eastern Market.
Now in its eighth year, Detroit Bookfest continues to grow in attendance and partnerships. According to founder and chairman Ryan M. Place, the event has expanded its focus on literacy, arts, and community involvement, especially for young readers.
This year’s children’s events will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and include multiple hands-on programs:
- 826michigan will host a writing zone with templates for zines and original poems, plus info on its K–12 programs.
- Birdie’s Bookmobile will feature all-day story readings and literacy-building games. Families can also register to visit Birdie’s Book Nest, a literacy-focused book bank for Detroit children.
- Detroit Institute of Arts will offer a Drop-In Workshop with take-home art projects inspired by global cultures and identity.
- Arts and Scraps will guide families in creating book-themed art using recycled materials.
Bookfest and Birdie’s Bookmobile aim to collect 2,000 new or gently used children’s books during the event.
All children’s programming and festival access are free. Attendees are encouraged to donate books by placing them in brightly colored bins at the venue. For details, visit detroitbookfest.com.
