Don was born on July 22, 1944, in Morenci to William and Rose “Leona” (Rice) Underwood. He graduated from Morenci High School with the Class of 1963. During his time there he competed on the Basketball, Football, and Track teams and was a multiple time All-State athlete and was named State of Michigan Athlete of the Year. After high school, Don enrolled at Ferris State University where he played football and earned his associate degree in Metallurgy. He was inducted into the United States Army in 1965 and proudly served until 1967 after earning the rank of Sergeant. On August 23rd in 1965, while on leave from the Army, he married his sweetheart, Sally L. Mincheff during a brief ceremony at the United Methodist Church in Morenci. Don retired from Ervin Industries after 36 years of employment.
Don will be remembered for his sense of humor and not having a filter. He really enjoyed making others laugh and had a soft heart. Don liked to take camping and fishing trips with his family and friends, making many memories over the years. He was extremely proud of his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Don was able to watch his grandchildren participate in sports and other activities all the way from high school until they graduated from college. With great joy Don was able to meet his twin great grandchildren before his passing.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 59 years, Sally Underwood; son, Mark (Michelle) Underwood; daughter, Amy (Nathan) Osburn; grandchildren, Dakota (Mady) Underwood, Shelby (Harrison) Kane, Waide (Sydney Faust) Osburn, Brady Osburn (Kennedy Lawson) and William Fiander; great grandchildren, Janie and Elias Kane; sisters-in-law, Ruth Underwood, Donna Fiander and Nancy Rutkowski; brothers-in-law, George Mincheff and Dave Traschke; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
