ADRIAN — Seven Lenawee County veterans or their family members received funeral assistance in June through the county’s Veterans Relief Fund. Each was awarded $300 to help cover burial expenses.

The update was shared during the June 13 meeting of the Lenawee County Department of Veterans Affairs Executive Committee. Veterans Service Director Tammy Sheldon reported that the county approved seven burial aid applications last month, with most tied to recent deaths of Vietnam-era veterans and their spouses.

Among the seven cases was one involving a Korean War veteran’s surviving spouse and another where both the veteran and spouse passed away within a month of each other. The $300 grants were issued per case, totaling $2,100 in disbursements from the Veterans Relief Fund for burial-related costs in June.

The funeral aid program provides emergency assistance to eligible veterans or their families for final arrangements, including headstone applications and burial permits.

The Department of Veterans Affairs continues to offer burial aid as part of its monthly emergency relief efforts. Applications are accepted year-round and can be started by calling 517-264-5335 or visiting the office at 1040 S. Winter Street in Adrian.
