ADRIAN — The Lenawee County Board of Commissioners held a memorial presentation Wednesday recognizing the life and public service of Sheriff Richard Germond. He served as sheriff for 36 years, making him the longest-serving sheriff in both county and state history.

Germond began his career with the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office in 1956 and was elected sheriff in 1964 at just 29 years old. He remained in office until retirement, shaping the county’s emergency response infrastructure and law enforcement leadership for more than four decades.

Board Chair James Van Doren, Commissioner Terry Collins, and Commissioner David Aungst delivered the proclamation, each representing areas of public safety Germond influenced — fire service, local law enforcement, and the sheriff’s department. Germond’s work led to the development of the county’s 9-1-1 and central dispatch system in the 1980s, which is still in operation today.

The proclamation passed unanimously. Germond died at age 90. His family was present and spoke briefly during the meeting.

Commissioners and colleagues described Germond as a leader known statewide for his professionalism and compassion. The county plans no further immediate tributes, but his legacy remains embedded in Lenawee’s public safety operations.
