MORENCI — The Morenci Downtown Development Authority has announced the launch of Downtown Commons, a new outdoor public space aimed at building community and revitalizing the city’s core. Located at 116 North Street, the Commons will feature oversized games and casual seating for residents and visitors alike.

The initiative grew from the DDA’s 2023 strategic goals, which prioritized placemaking and creative use of underutilized downtown lots. The grassy parcel on North Street was chosen for a temporary activation project. When the lot became available for purchase in July 2024, the Morenci City Council approved acquiring the property the following month.

The Commons will serve as a flexible and welcoming space. Installations will rotate based on community use and seasonal events. The effort is led by the DDA’s Placemaking Committee: Brad Frederick, Mary Margaret Gallup, Tony Muzzi, and Chelsea Craig.

The first installations will launch in time for the June 7 Summer Saturday event. Planned features include giant Jenga and Connect Four, a horseshoe pit, and painted checkerboards on café tables. North Street Pub will provide cornhole boards during select times.

The Commons is located within Morenci’s expanded Social District and is fully funded by the DDA. The city’s Department of Public Works will handle ongoing maintenance.

Installations will change seasonally based on public input.

Community members are encouraged to share ideas and feedback with the Placemaking Committee. Input will shape future enhancements and help evolve the space to reflect local needs.
