ADRIAN — The Lenawee County Board of Commissioners has officially closed out a job creation grant tied to a downtown Adrian business, with officials noting the program remains underused by local employers.

The $82,996 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) loan, awarded in 2024 to 101 E. Maumee LLC, helped fund working capital, payroll, inventory, and interior upgrades. In exchange, the business was required to create three full-time jobs for low-to-moderate-income individuals.

According to county staff, the business exceeded expectations—creating five qualifying jobs, with 61% meeting income eligibility requirements. A required public hearing was held Wednesday with no objections submitted, and the board voted unanimously to close out the grant.

Lenawee County Administrator Kim Murphy said the grant program isn’t competitive, but local participation has been minimal.

The loan will be repaid over eight years through a third-party administrator, with funds returning to the county’s revolving loan pool for future use.

Funded through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the CDBG program supports small business growth while expanding access to sustainable employment.
