ADRIAN — Lenawee County’s recycling coordinator confirmed the county was approved for grant funding on May 7, but says state officials are now pushing for a more “sustainable” long-term model — despite laws that require counties to maintain recycling services even without a local landfill.
The disconnect has left local officials questioning how to move forward. While the funding is technically guaranteed, there’s increasing concern that programs like the county’s annual tire event may not be supported at the state level much longer. The core issue appears to be a shift in state messaging that favors regional models over localized ones.
County leaders are now weighing whether to continue offering these services with local funding or cut them altogether. The outcome could affect everything from annual events to daily recycling logistics — and, ultimately, residents’ access to essential waste services.
