Russell Dwayne Hamm, age 78, of Adrian, passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at the Hospice of Lenawee Home in Adrian.
He was born on June 29, 1946, in Romulus, Michigan, to David and Lorena (Mears) Hamm. After graduating from high school, Russ served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1969 and again from 1971 to 1975. He achieved the rank of highly decorated Specialist Five (SP5). Following his military career, Russ worked as a mechanic at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. Before this, he served as a deputy animal control officer with the sheriff’s department and went on to work for the local transit system.
On January 15, 1966, Russ married JoAnn Marian Miller at Grace Lutheran Church in Inkster, Michigan. They raised a family of two children and celebrated over 59 wonderful years together.
Russ was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and American Legion Post 97. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing and later found joy playing euchre at the senior center. Woodworking became a meaningful part of his life; he was highly skilled and created beautiful pieces that reflected his craftsmanship.
To cherish his memory, Russ leaves his loving wife, JoAnn; two children, Jeff (Shelly) Hamm and Shelly (Herb) Schroeder; two siblings, Phyllis Bridenthal and David Hamm; and four grandchildren, Dylan, Russ, Seth and Peyton. In addition to his parents, Russ was preceded in death by seven siblings: Clara, Kay, Opal, Bill, Jack, Bobby, and Marynell.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services for Russ will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Details to follow.
