A Simple Yet Powerful Message for World No Tobacco Day

ADRIAN — A line of shirts now stretches outside the Human Services Building on Winter Street, but these shirts aren’t for sale — they’re a message.

In recognition of World No Tobacco Day on May 31st, the Lenawee County Health Department teamed up with the Lenawee YOUTH Council for its annual Clothesline Project.

Youth Council teens hung 147 shirts — each one representing a life lost last year to tobacco-related causes in Lenawee County. The display will remain up for two weeks.

Tobacco use kills more than 6 million people globally every year. In Lenawee County, smoking is the leading cause of preventable death — resulting in more deaths than many other major public health crises combined.

The clothesline is a silent memorial, but its message is loud and clear.
