Childhood Apraxia Awareness Day

ADRIAN — During their meeting, the Lenawee board of commissioners passed a motion to make May 14th Childhood Apraxia Awareness Day.

As Commissioner Krasny explained, childhood apraxia is a neurological speech disorder that affects 1 in 1,000 children in the US. It affects the brain’s ability to process the muscle movements required to execute speech.

If childhood apraxia is not detected early, then it can lead to issues with speech, reading, and spelling. This initiative is designed to empower families and speech professionals through community involvement and awareness of childhood apraxia.

The proposition for Childhood Apraxia Awareness Day was followed by a motion to make May mental health awareness month. Both reinforce the ideals of Lenawee County with the importance of public health and safety, and demonstrate that the Lenawee community is welcoming to all.
